A windy night to beat the windy city: Rockies win 6-5

DENVER – A chilly spring night left the Rockies triumphant in a 6 to 5 win over the Cubs, home in Denver, Friday night.

In their second at home weekend of the 2022 season, the Rockies hosted the Cubs for the second night of their four game series. Following a five-run fourth inning, the Rockies remained in the lead for the final five innings, tying the series before the start of the weekend.

Coors Field was packed with fans despite the temperature dropping below 40°F and wind speeds edging 12mph. With a fair share of Cubs fans present, the atmosphere was electric following each play.

“It was the perfect night for a baseball game” says Nina Stoops, a Rockies fan, “A bit cold, but I’m happy baseball season is back”.

Rockies starting pitcher, Germán Marquez, let up two runs in the second inning. Alfonso Rivas’s single sent Johnathan Villar home as Chicago scored first. In the following play, Rafael Ortega singled to the right, sending Heyward home as Chicago led 2-0 heading into the third.

Nick Madrigal scored off Willson Contreras’s double at the beginning of the third for Chicago to grow to a 3-0 lead before Colorado even got on base.

In the bottom of the fourth the Rockies scored two off a double into deep right field from Sam Hilliard. Alan Trejo’s three run homerun which sent Sam Hilliard and Garrett Hampson home, followed, pushing the Rockies into a 5-3 lead.

“The whole game was played in that one inning,” says Leigh Christiansen, a Rockies fan. “That was the most action we’ve seen from the Rockies all season.”

Both teams scored in the 5th, the Cubs off a fly ball to the center, and the Rockies off a homerun down the center, and the Rockies remained in the lead for the three scoreless innings that followed.

With a failed attempt to tie the game in the top of the ninth, Jonathan Villar scored for the Cubs off a double to deep left center field from Patrick Wisdom.

Friday’s 6-5 win was the Rockies 5th of the 2022 season, making their overall record 5-2. Chicago trails with a 4-2 record as they prepare to take on Tampa Bay at home following their weekend in Denver.

In the first week of the season the Rockies have swept Texas and won their series against the Dodgers, 2-1. Currently ranked third in the National League West Division, Colorado holds the same record as the teams ranked higher: Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The Rockies will finish their series at home against the Cubs before welcoming Philadelphia on Monday. To wrap up the first month of games, Colorado will travel to Detroit and Philadelphia before welcoming Cincinnati.

If last year’s record of 74-87 is any indication of the Rockies hunger for victory, it seems like the team is off to a successful start. As Denver starts heating up, so will the team, as they look forward to another rewarding season here in the Rockies.

You did a great job of highlighting the setting and the conditions with descriptive language, making it easy to feel like I’m at the scene as a reader. There’s detailed description of key plays, and the playful lead sets up the story well. Leigh Christiansen’s quote about the whole game being played in that one inning is well-chosen, as it emphasizes a crucial part of the game from the perspective of the crowd. The end of the article provides valuable information, as it gives background on what’s coming next for the Rockies, and how they stack up compared to other teams in the league.

You did a great job allowing the reader to be at the game with your visualizing writing. It was interesting to see another form of writing a baseball game as well. Personally, I am a fan of both teams so I think it’s an encapsulating story. I also believe you used your quotes wisely throughout your story, allowing it to be another way to add details about the game. I also really liked the fact that you brought up the final record of the Rockies from last season to allow a chance to anticipate what is going to happen to them this season.
