The crowd cheered and chanted once the game against the Philadelphia Phillies with the Colorado Rockies began on Tuesday, April 19th, 2022, and many Rockies fans knew that they has a strong chance of coming out with another win in their pocket from the previous game on Monday, April 18, 2022, that ended with the Rockies taking the win with the final score of 6-5. This left the Rockies with the standing of 8-3 overall and the Phillies with 4-8 which left the Rockies third in their standing for the National League West.
Once the first inning started, Phillies’ first baseman Rhys Hoskins hit a triple and waited for the opportunity to score a run for the Phillies. Shortly after, Phillies’ right fielder Bryce Harper offered the perfect chance, hitting a single, allowing Hoskins to score the first run for the team.
During the second inning, the Phillies continued to persevere, and they scored another run. Phillies’ left fielder Matt Vierling hit a single, which allowed Phillies’ third baseman Alec Bohm to secure another run for the Phillies.

After facing two runs from the opposing team, in the third inning, the Rockies were able to make a comeback. Rockies’ first baseman C.J. Cron was at-bat and made a sacrifice hit in order to allow Rockies’ center fielder Charlie Blackmon to score the first run for the team, making the score 2-1, Phillies.
Once the third inning was over, the score from the Rockies shook the opposing team, and the Rockies scored once again in the bottom of the fourth inning when Rockies’ left outfielder Kris Bryant scored. The Rockies then took the lead once Rockies’ catcher Elias Diaz hit a single towards the center, leaving an opportunity for Rockies’ shortstop Brendan Rodgers to score.
“It was impressive to watch the Rockies score runs that made them take the lead. Once that happened, the crowd became loud and were cheering the Rockies on,” University of Denver (DU) student Ellie Stetson said.
The score of 3-2 was persistent for the next inning, and at the top of the sixth inning, the Phillies scored two runs due to Phillies’ outfielder Kyle Schwarber hitting a homer to left field. This left the Phillies leading, 4-3.

This remained the score up until the bottom of the seventh-inning when Cron homered to left field, allowing the Rockies to score another three runs, leaving them with the lead.
The Phillies scored another run in the top of the eighth-inning but it was not enough to catch up with the Rockies. The bottom of the eighth-inning passed without another run, leaving a high probability of the Rockies coming out with the win, and the final score of 6-5.
The top of the ninth-inning was the last opportunity for the Phillies to catch up to the Rockies. However, quickly three players were out, leaving the Rockies with another win under their belt.
“Watching the game showed how unpredictable baseball can be. You could see in the faces of Rockies fans that they lost hope when the Phillies had the lead in the first half of the game; although, once the Rockies pulled through and quickly scored many runs, the crowd had the energy they had at the beginning once again,” DU student Andrew Arndorfer said.
This game provided an occasion to showcase the growth in skills the Colorado Rockies gained from their Spring training. After this, the thought of whether the Rockies can be the lead team in the National West League is one that many can ponder while the rest of this season plays out.

As someone who watches baseball very frequently, I appreciate the imagery you provided in your story. It made me feel as if I experienced the game myself, and I find it difficult for myself to feel that way when typically reading game recaps. I also love how you thoughtfully organized your story, and explaining the plays that occurred within the game. You definitely have a lot of knowledge with baseball, and that is demonstrated through your writing. Even if a non-baseball fan read this, I think it would be easy for them to get a simple understanding of the game just because you explained the gameplay using clear language.

I also wrote my article on a Rockies game so it was cool to see another approach to writing about a baseball game. I like that you included information on the records of both teams and the atmosphere of the crowd. The quotes you used were also very important and helped a reader visualize the game a lot better. I also liked that you ended with a potential scenario and almost a question as it wrapped up the intentions of the team and implied what was to come next for the team.
